In 2021, I created Bags on the Hill; a company set up for selling my handmade bags. I aim to upcycle material either by sourcing material from charity shops, or using fabric generously donated by friends and customers. My range of items has now expanded to include other gifts such as bunting and aprons. My items can be found at: bagsonthehill.sumupstore.com, the Museum in the Park (Stroud) and The Barn Shop (Chalford Hill).
As my confidence in sewing grew, I made my own clothes, again using material sourced from charity shops. Curtains and duvet covers are ideal for making pretty dresses! I decided Glad Rags on the Hill was an apt name for this venture.
I then made some curtains and blinds for my home, and realised this was another service I could offer. I advertised on the Chalford Hill scarecrow trail, and when my first customer contacted me, Swags on the Hill was born!
Roman blinds can be made in cascading or standard format, depending on the preference of the customer, the fabric pattern and window size. Interlining is added to give structure and a more luxurious feel, and lining can be standard or blackout.
Curtains can be made with the following headings:
Interlining is an optional extra. Interlining traps the air between the layers of fabric and minimises heat loss. It also gives curtains structure and volume, resulting in a fuller finish.
Lining can be standard or blackout depending on the room, and the preference of the customer.
Cushion pads used are either duck feather or microfibre, depending on customer preference. Cushions are piped with the same or contrasting fabric and have a zip added so the covers can be removed.
High quality, firm seat pads are used. These can be piped, and have a hidden zip at the back so the cover can be removed.

I was delighted with the curtain Sarah made for me. She did an initial visit to measure the doorway and then sent me a detailed breakdown of the cost of having the curtain made. Sarah made two further visits to ensure the curtain fitted perfectly. She made the curtain within the time frame she had set and kept me informed of progress. I would recommend Sarah unreservedly.
Jan, Chalford Hill
Sarah has carried out several pieces of work for us including a blind, cushions of all sizes and designing and executing a seat pad and arm covers for a tricky chair. In each case she has taken our requirement into consideration, produced a good technical solution and manufactured an attractive and practical result.
